Cremation Burial Options at Gate of Heaven Cemetery

Choosing cremation interment is a deeply personal decision, and Gate of Heaven Cemetery is here to help your family find the right place.

We offer a range of cremation interment options to meet the needs of Catholic families in Cincinnati. Each option provides a permanent, sacred place within our 160-acre grounds where families can visit, pray, and remember for generations to come.

What Does the Catholic Church Teach About Cremation?

In 1963, the Catholic Church lifted its prohibition on cremation under certain circumstances. In 1997, permission was granted for cremated remains to be present in church for the liturgical rites of burial. The Church continues to prefer that the body be present for funeral rites, with cremation taking place afterward.

Indoor Glass & Granite Front Niches

Located inside the Administration Building, two adjoining rooms feature glass-front and granite-front niches in a climate-controlled setting. One room is dedicated to Mary, Gate of Heaven, and the other depicts Saint Peter receiving the Keys to Heaven from Christ. Each shrine is surrounded by memorial candles. Glass-front niches allow for the display of an urn, one personal item, and one religious item.

Columbaria

A columbarium — a structure made up of individual niches for cremated remains — provides families with a permanent resting place that honors the dignity of the deceased and invites ongoing prayer and remembrance. Gate of Heaven Cemetery offers several columbarium options so families can choose the place that feels most meaningful to them.

Outdoor Columbaria

Throughout Gate of Heaven’s 160 acres, columbaria are situated among mature trees and peaceful landscapes. These granite memorial structures offer single and double niches and are named after saints, angels, and figures from Scripture.

Bell Tower Columbaria

Located around the Bell Tower, these black granite niches surround a fountain while carillon bells ring every quarter hour. Granite benches provide a place for prayer, reflection, and visitation.

Apostles Columbaria

Located in Section 20, the Apostles Columbaria features shrines dedicated to Saints Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Granite walls are engraved with Gospel passages and spiritual quotations. Single and double niches are available.

Baptism of Christ Columbaria

Situated beside a pond and fountain, this columbarium includes a brick pathway designed in the shape of the Cross. The granite structures and steel trellis feature the Gate of Heaven symbol. Single and double niches are available.

St. Dorothea’s Angel Columbaria

Located in Section 15, this sunburst-shaped columbarium is named after Saint Dorothea, Patroness of Gardeners, and the story of her angel. The columbarium contains approximately 300 niches and is highlighted by a sculpture of Dorothea’s Angel.

In-Ground Cremation Burial

Cremated remains may be buried within a traditional grave throughout most sections of the cemetery. Up to two urns can be interred in a single grave, allowing spouses to remain together in a permanent, sacred resting place.

Traditional Ground Burial

Traditional in-ground burial provides a permanent resting place in consecrated ground, marked by a memorial that reflects the faith and legacy of the deceased. Gate of Heaven Cemetery offers single graves, companion graves, and family lots containing two or more graves — giving families the flexibility to remain together across generations.

Mausoleum Entombment in Cincinnati

The Garden Mausoleum Complex at Gate of Heaven Cemetery is dedicated to the authors of the Gospels – Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John – and provides above-ground interment facilities in a beautiful setting that is accessible in every season and rooted in the Catholic faith.

For families seeking a place of entombment within a setting of enduring beauty, the Garden Mausoleum Complex offers above-ground burial in a space that invites ongoing prayer and visitation.

Lawn Crypts

Lawn crypts are underground burial vaults designed for two interments. These pre-installed, two-tiered burial vaults are located around the Bell Tower and fountain areas, offering a peaceful and permanent place of rest.

Family Estates

Family Estates are custom-designed burial areas created exclusively for individual families. Varying in size and capacity, each estate provides a private space for burial, visitation, and remembrance — a lasting legacy within the sacred grounds of Gate of Heaven.
